Touch Typing for Beginners: Learn the Home Row in One Week
2026-10-15 ยท 6 min read

Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard, using all ten fingers. It feels slow for the first few days, then suddenly becomes natural. Here is a simple 7-day plan using our free lessons.
Day 1: Find home
Place your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. Thumbs rest on the space bar. Start with Lesson 1: F and J, then D and K.
Day 2: Complete the home row
Finish S and L, A and ;, then G and H. Finally type real home-row words. Go slowly and aim for 95% accuracy.
Day 3โ4: The top row
Each finger reaches up and returns home. Work through the top row lessons: E and I, R and U, T and Y, W and O, Q and P.
Day 5: The bottom row
Reach down for V and M, C and comma, X and full stop. Then type all letters in real words.
Day 6: Capitals and punctuation
Use the Shift key with the little finger of the opposite hand. Practise in the Shift lesson and punctuation.
Day 7: Your first real test
Take a 60-second typing test. Don't worry about the number yet; focus on not looking down. Repeat lessons where you earned fewer than three stars.
Tips that help beginners
- Cover your hands with a cloth if you keep looking.
- Say the letters quietly while you type them.
- Stop when tired: 15 focused minutes beat an hour of frustration.
- Play Word Rain as a reward after each lesson.
