Typing tips & tricks
Proven techniques to type faster with fewer mistakes.
Posture
- Sit like a pro gamer. Back straight, feet flat, elbows at about 90ยฐ. The screen top should be at eye level so your neck stays relaxed.
- Float your wrists. Never rest your wrists on the desk while typing. Let them hover slightly so your fingers can reach every row without strain.
- Take micro-breaks. Every 20 minutes, look away for 20 seconds and shake out your hands. Tired hands make mistakes.
Technique
- Always return home. After every key, your finger goes back to its home key (ASDF JKL;). Home is what makes typing blind possible.
- Feel the bumps. F and J have small bumps. Find them without looking and you instantly know where every other key is.
- One finger, one job. Each key belongs to exactly one finger. Using the wrong finger "because it is faster" will cap your speed later.
- Opposite-hand Shift. Capital on the left side? Hold the right Shift. Capital on the right side? Left Shift. Your hands never twist.
- Thumb on the space bar. Use the thumb of the hand that did not type the last letter. It keeps a smooth left-right rhythm.
Accuracy
- Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Practise at a speed where you make almost no mistakes. Speed comes from clean repetition, not from rushing.
- Don't look down. Looking at the keyboard costs about half a second each time. Cover your hands with a cloth if you have to.
- Fix weak keys first. Your slowest 3 keys hold back your whole speed. The weak-key trainer builds drills just for them.
- Mistakes are data. Do not get angry at errors. Notice which finger slipped, breathe, and keep the rhythm going.
Speed
- Type in rhythm. Steady, even keystrokes beat bursts of speed and pauses. Imagine a drummer keeping time.
- Read one word ahead. While your fingers type the current word, your eyes should already be reading the next one.
- Learn common chunks. Words like "the", "and", "ing" and "tion" become a single motion. Practise them until they feel like one key.
- Chase the combo. In tests, aim for long combos instead of raw speed. Long combos mean high accuracy, and high WPM follows.
Practice
- 10 minutes a day. Short daily practice beats a 2-hour session once a week. Keep your streak alive with the Daily Challenge.
- Play to learn. Games like Turbo Race and Asteroid Blaster train fast word recognition and reaction. Mix them into your routine.
- Track your progress. Check My Stats weekly. A rising average beats one lucky high score.
- Type what you love. Paste song lyrics, notes or a favourite article into "Your own text". Interesting text keeps you practising longer.
Shortcuts
- Delete whole words. Ctrl + Backspace (Option + Backspace on Mac) deletes the previous word, and it works here and almost everywhere.
- Instant restart. In a typing test press Tab then Enter for a new text, or Esc to restart the same one.
- Copy-paste like a pro. Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + Z (undo) and Ctrl + A (select all) save hours every month.
- Find anything. Ctrl + F finds text on any page or document. Ctrl + L jumps to the browser address bar.
