Typing Ergonomics: Posture, Wrists and Breaks for Pain-Free Typing
2026-10-08 · 5 min read

Good ergonomics is not just about comfort: relaxed hands type faster and make fewer mistakes. Use this checklist to set up your desk.
Sitting position
- Feet flat on the floor, knees at about 90°.
- Back straight and supported, shoulders relaxed.
- Elbows close to your body, bent at about 90°.
Screen and keyboard
- The top of the screen at eye level, about an arm's length away.
- The keyboard directly in front of you, with the B key in line with your nose.
- Keep the keyboard flat or slightly negative; tall feet bend your wrists.
Wrists and hands
Never rest your wrists on the desk while typing. Let them float slightly so each finger can reach its keys. Rest your palms only during pauses. Keep your fingers curved and light on the home row.
Take micro-breaks
Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and shake out your hands. Stretch your fingers and wrists every hour.
Warning signs
Tingling, numbness or pain that lasts are signals to rest and adjust your setup. If they continue, see a doctor.
Put it into practice
